Engineering Software Success: A Spotlight on Grant Recipient Zaden Technologies

Huntsville-based defense software company Zaden Technologies, led by CEO and President Valentine Nwachukwu, has been awarded an Innovate Alabama SBIR/STTR Supplemental Grant to develop and commercialize its Icarus technology.

Used in defense systems, Icarus is an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tool that automates systems modeling language (SysML) model generation from documentation. The Icarus platform uses Architectureas-Code technology to automate MBSE processes and generate SysML diagrams.

Zaden’s Phase II grant objectives include:

  1. Intellectual Property Protection: Securing intellectual property (IP) rights to protect the foundational Icarus technology.
  2. Product Testing: Validating the Icarus technology through thorough internal testing.
  3. Technical Work: Developing a clear path to market for Icarus, aligning with government needs.
  4. Compliance and Certification: Ensuring Icarus meets relevant industry standards and government regulations.

The Phase II grant plan also includes identifying at least three potential strategic partners, including one Alabama-based partner, who can contribute to Icarus’ development and deployment within the first 2 months of the project. Zaden plans to work closely with partners to integrate their expertise and resources into the Icarus development process, aiming to accelerate time to market by at least 20% compared to initial projections.

Zaden will also prove out the User Experience (UX) Design for Icarus, conducting in-depth user research, and engaging with at least 15 commercial end-users to understand their needs, preferences, and pain points within the first three months of the project. A comprehensive pilot program is also planned.

Workforce development is also a focus, as Zaden will create a comprehensive training and development plan to upskill at least five existing team members, including three Alabama-based personnel. Zaden plans to identify and attract two new Alabama-based candidates with the necessary skills and experience to complement the existing team and support Icarus’ growth.

Through the supplemental grant, Zaden will add three Alabama-based personnel to support the development and commercialization of Icarus. Two will be dedicated to compliance and certification, and one will support Icarus’ growth and development. Adding these Alabama-based personnel will contribute to the project’s success, create new job opportunities and foster economic growth within the state.

Zaden’s project to develop and commercialize Icarus is strategically designed to ensure the technology is protected, validated and positioned for success in the market. By securing intellectual property rights, conducting rigorous product testing and developing a clear commercial roadmap, Zaden aims to bring innovative solutions to government end users, addressing their critical capability gaps.
