Developing Defense at the Next Level: A Spotlight on Grant Recipient KODA Technologies

Defense contractor KODA Technologies in Huntsville will use an Innovate Alabama Phase SBIR/STTR Supplemental Grant to further develop advanced missile weaponry nozzle technology.

The SBIR grant enables KODA to use advanced simulations for testing new high-temperature materials in full-scale representative flight geometries. These simulations will help verify the effectiveness of nozzle materials in the high temperature and pressure conditions experienced by advanced missiles. Nozzles require advanced materials due to the accelerating high-temperature and high-pressure exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. KODA was able to bring on an intern from Alabama A&M and work with other engineers at KODA with a PI, Dr. Daniel Dorney.

This research is significant for the defense industry in North Alabama, with major defense corporations showing interest based in their involvement in advanced missile projects with the Missile Defense Agency, DOD, and NASA.

KODA, from a Native American word meaning “allies,” was founded on six decades of weapon system development experience – from hands-on engineering to executive leadership. The company solves complex problems and develops highly technical products, ranging from designing radar systems to leading large-scale flight tests to managing international programs.
